David Rouzer won his primary and is going on to fight a vulnerable eight-term Democrat, he told LaDonna Hale Curzon, Host and Executive Producer, Sarah Palin Radio in a recent interview. Rouzer’s polling numbers have tightened to a statistical dead heat, and with anti-incumbent moods running at a fever pitch, he could pull off an upset win. North Carolina is a swing state and more Republican wins there will decrease Obama’s chances of carrying the state in his November reelection bid.
Two Balanced Budgets without Tax Increases
Rouzer is a designated Young Gun by that National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).
He said he is running because of the federal debt and deficit. Rouzer has a record of writing two balanced budgets with no tax increase, while he served in the State Senate.
Opponent Supported Stimulus and has Deep Connections to Big Labor
Rouzer’s opponent, Mike McIntyre voted for Obama’s stimulus and is deeply connected with Big Labor. McIntyre is conservative “on social issues but not on bread and butter economic issues,” Rouzer said.
He out-raised McIntyre by $100,000 on individual donors. In contrast, McIntyre’s money comes from PACs and special interest groups. Rouzer said he has traveled throughout his district where most of his donations originate, and many constituents who have voted for McIntyre in the past are now supporting Rouzer, “because they know we have to reverse course.”
Rouzer said McIntyre is vulnerable “because he was never really challenged in the past” and his district having been re-drawn is different from what it had been prior. The district is more conservative and Rouzer already represents a portion of it in the State Senate.
Rouzer’s endorsements include: Jesse Helms’ wife Dorothy, small business people and local Tea Party groups. Curzon said that in her opinion Helms “was Tea Party before there was a Tea Party.” Rouzer has neither a Sarah Palin endorsement nor an American Grizzlies United (AGU) endorsement as this story goes to press.
Internal Polling: Dead Heat, and Leads on Favorable Opinion by 6%
His internal poll numbers indicate a statistical dead heat and in his internal polling of those who formed an opinion of both candidates, Rouzer leads 48-42.
He said his campaign has to raise more money to build brand awareness, adding that when people learn about Rouzer, they tend to support him.
Jobs, Economy, Government Over-Reach
Like nearly all candidates interviewed by either Curzon or Scholla, Rouzer said the most critical issues in district are jobs and the economy. “We can’t keep spending the way we’re spending.” Low taxes and less government interference mean more jobs. “The left thinks we can spend our way to prosperity,” he said.
As a State Senator, Rouzer said he fought to do away with rules and regulations “that put a stranglehold on small businesses” and will do the same in Washington. He described ObamaCare as being “all those choking regulations magnified.”
When asked what the first he would do if sworn in, Rouzer answered, “the first thing we need to do is repeal ObamaCare, and bring real reform to health care. Most problems in healthcare stem from too much government interference, and this is without ObamaCare.”
Rouzer wants Congressional oversight over federal agencies. “Any new rule or regulation should have to go back to Congress for approval before it can take effect,” he said.
